Stella Azzurra Rome is an Italian basketball club from Rome that played in Serie A for a total of 20 seasons.

history

The club was founded in 1938 under the full name L'Associazione sportiva della Stella Azzurra by mostly young people who liked to play basketball. The Second World War initially prevented rapid growth or the development of the small club. After the war, the development continued with very young players.

1954 the club managed the leap into the top flight in the Italian basketball, the Serie A . Eighth place was achieved in the first season. This was followed by the establishment in the series, in the meantime the club advanced into the top group when it was fourth in 1957. In the early 1960s, some top performers could no longer be held against more solvent clubs such as Olimpia Milano or Ignos Varese , which was followed by the sporting crash. In the 1961/62 season, relegation was only just avoided, which was no longer successful in 1966 when Stella was relegated to the second-rate Serie B as the last-placed .

With the main sponsor Ramazzotti , they returned to the House of Lords three years later, but the team was the last to leave again after just one season. The next attempt to establish himself again in Serie A failed in the 1971/72 season, when Stella was again knocked off the last. Between 1975 and 1980, in the meantime the municipal company IBP was the main sponsor of the club and accordingly the team ran as IBP Stella Azzurra , played continuously in Serie A and reached fourth place twice. In the meanwhile introduced play-offs for the Italian championship, Stella failed in the quarter-finals in 1979. This was also the last participation in championship play-offs, since the club was relegated to Serie B in 1980 and has not made it back to the elite league since then.

After that, the club slipped into lower-class leagues and is currently playing in Divisione Nazionale B , the fourth division.

The club plays its home games in the 800-seat Altero Felici arena .

Korać Cup

The club played two seasons in the Korać Cup , a European basketball cup at the time . Right at the first participation in the 1974/75 season he reached the round of 16. In the group stage they failed at FC Barcelona and KK Bosna Sarajevo .

The second participation in the 1976/77 season was more successful. In the group phase, the team prevailed this time and met in the semifinals on the Yugoslav representative KK Jugoplastika Split , who were favored due to winning the Korac Cup in the previous season. In the first leg in Split, the Romans had no chance and clearly lost 71:96. The second leg in the home hall could be won with 87:76, but the 25 basket points from the first leg could not be made up.

Former players and coaches
