Stephan Patt (born July 28, 1961 in Cologne ) is a German neuropathologist and moral theologian . Since 2007 he has been a priest of the Roman Catholic Church , in the Prelature Opus Dei .

Life

Stephan Patt obtained his Abitur in 1980 at the Hansa-Gymnasium in Cologne . He then studied human medicine at the Universities of Bonn , Cologne and Essen (1980–1986). From 1986 he worked as an assistant to Jorge Cervós at the Clinic of the Free University of Berlin, initially in the Institute for Neuropathology and in the Clinic for Neurosurgery . He worked in general pathology at the Berlin-Spandau hospital . He was also a pathology assistant at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1989 he received his doctorate in neuropathology on the altered shape of nerve fibers in patients with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's . In 1994 he completed his habilitation in neuropathology on gene changes in brain tumors . From 1993 to 1995 he was a fellow of the DFG at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association Berlin-Buch in the Department of Cellular Neurosciences. He then worked as a senior physician at the Institute for Neuropathology at the Free University of Berlin (1995–1996).

Between 1996 and 2004 he was professor of neuropathology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . From 1999 he held the office of senator for the medical department. He was a member of several national and international academic societies.

In 2004 he began studying theology at the University of Navarra . In 2006 he was awarded a licentiate in moral theology and ecclesiastic theology. In 2007 he received his doctorate theologicae on a topic from Spiritual Theology ( Edith Stein's contribution to the theological-mystical concept of the “ soul ground ”).

On May 26, 2007, he was ordained a priest from the hands of Bishop Javier Echevarría in Rome . In December 2007 he returned to Cologne and has since worked in youth and adult pastoral care.

Patt's publications cover topics in the fields of neuropathology and medical ethics .
