Stephan Strasser (born March 13, 1905 in Vienna , Austria ; † July 1, 1991 in Nijmegen , Netherlands ) was an Austrian philosopher and phenomenologist .

Life

Strasser first studied linguistics and psychology in Vienna and Dijon, which he completed with a doctorate on the poet Joseph von Eichendorff in 1932. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich, Strasser had to emigrate to Belgium because of his Hungarian-Jewish origins. In 1942 he became a research assistant at the Husserl Archive in Löwen , which was newly founded in 1940 , where he transcribed Edmund Husserl's shorthand manuscripts together with his wife and mother-in-law. In 1947 he received a call to the chair of philosophical psychology and anthropology at the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen , where he retired in 1975. In addition, he taught normative and historical pedagogy at the same university until 1970.

At first, Strasser was primarily concerned with the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger . Later, the thinking of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Emmanuel Levinas moved into the focus of his attention. Strasser was a staunch opponent of the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre , as well as against structuralism and Marxist thinkers. His work was international. He made the writings of Emmanuel Levinas known in Germany and introduced the writings of Edmund Husserl in France. He was also the editor of the first volume of the Husserliana series Cartesian Meditations and Paris Lectures .
