Stephanoceros fimbriatus is the only species of the genus Stephanoceros from the tribe of rotifers (Rotatoria).
description
The animals are 1000 to 1500 µm in size. They live sedentarily in delicate gelatinous tubs that only become visible through deposits of detritus . The animals have a catch funnel and a chewing device like Collotheca . There are five long, lashed tentacles above the funnel. There are 19 pairs of long tufts of eyelashes on each tentacle, all pointing outwards; shorter bristles point inwards. Life expectancy is ten to 14 days.
Fishing technique
The animals fling the prey with their outer eyelashes into the trap formed by the tentacles, the outer eyelashes then cross and form an inescapable cage with the inner eyelashes. Flagellates , algae , ciliate animals and other, smaller rotifers are mainly caught .
distribution
The animals live in nutrient-rich waters and hang on milfoil , duckweed , water lilies and spawning herbs .
