The Stephanskirche is a Protestant church in the Stadtallendorf district of Schweinsberg .

history

The church was built in 1506. During the Thirty Years War the church burned down in 1633 and was only rebuilt between 1657 and 1664. From 1989 to 2000 the Stephanskirche was extensively renovated with financial support from the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck , the city of Stadtallendorf and the state of Hesse .

building

The Stephanskirche is a three-aisled Gothic hall church . Due to the cramped location between the castle in the east and the city in the west, the nave does not have the required length, but an almost square shape. The higher choir is wider than the central nave and ends with a 5/8 end. The high, steep church roof has a squat ridge turret with four bells , the oldest of which was cast in 1680. On the outside wall of the church is the tombstone of the legal scholar , genealogist and pioneer of modern heraldry Johann Georg Estor , who was born in Schweinsberg in 1699.

The altar dates from 1885, the crucifix from the pre-Reformation period. The stained window shows Christ as judge of the world in the middle , St. Elisabeth and the miracle of roses on the left and the church patron Stephen with a stone in front of his forehead, the symbol of his martyrdom .

In the 20th century, a gallery was built above the main portal in the west , on which is the organ , built in 1957 .

The star vault of the central nave and the net vault of the side aisles are supported by four octagonal pillars. The double grooved ribs of the vault rest on consoles that are designed as heads. Five different sized sacraments and reliquaries refer to a Catholic tradition of church building.
