Stephen Todd "Steve" Alford (born November 23, 1964 in Franklin , Indiana ) is an American basketball coach and former player . He is currently (2015) coaching the college team at the University of California, Los Angeles .

As a player, Alford led Indiana University to the championship in the 1987 NCAA Tournament. When he finished his college career, he also led the university's all-time scorer list. He then played for the Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors for a total of four years in the NBA . Together with the later NBA stars Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing , he also won gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics .

After retiring in 1991, he became a trainer and coached, among others, Manchester University , Missouri State University , University of Iowa and University of New Mexico .
