The thymus pannonicus , Steppe Quendel or Pannonischer thyme ( Thymus kosteleckyanus , " Thymus pannonicus ") is a plant type from the genus of thyme ( Thymus ) in the family of Labiatae . It was named in honor of Vincenz Franz Kostelecky .

description

The steppe thyme is a small shrub whose flower-bearing stems are 10 to 20 (rarely up to 30) cm long and grow upright to ascending and are woody and often branched at the base. Usually they are hairy all around or rarely only on two sides. Creeping, non-flower-bearing stems are not formed. The leaves are usually 10 to 15 mm long and 3 to 5 mm wide. They are almost sessile, elliptical-lanceolate, pointed, herbaceous and sparsely dotted with glands. The veining is only vaguely visible.

The inflorescences are rarely branched. The bracts resemble the foliage leaves. The calyx is 2.5 to 3.5 (rarely up to 4) mm long, bell-shaped and usually greenish to straw-colored. The upper lip is longer than the calyx tube. The upper teeth are about 1 cm long, triangular to lanceolate and ciliate. The crown is pale pink or red.

Occurrence and locations

The species occurs in Central Central and Eastern Central Europe and in Eastern Europe. In the north the distribution area extends to the 57th parallel in central Russia.

In Austria the species rarely occurs in the federal states of Burgenland , Vienna and Lower Austria only in the Pannonian area on dry grassland of the colline altitude level. It is considered endangered.
