Vincenz Franz Kostelecky

Vincenz Franz Kostelecky , also Vincenz Franz Kosteletzky , (born March 13, 1801 in Brno -Kumrowitz, † August 18, 1887 in Prague ) was a Bohemian botanist and doctor. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Kostel. "

Live and act

Kostelecky studied medicine in Prague (doctorate in 1842) and was assistant to Johann Christian Mikan , whose successor he became professor of medical-pharmaceutical botany after his retirement in 1831 (with the appointment of full professor in 1835). After reorganizing the University of Prague, he became professor of botany. In 1852/53 and 1868/68 he was rector of the university. In 1872 he retired. He was primarily interested in the systematics and pharmaceutical applications of botany and published an extensive handbook of medicinal plants. He was also known for his teaching and directed the Botanical Garden in Prague.

He also worked in Prague as a doctor for the poor during the cholera epidemic around 1830 and, since he had no children, left his fortune for charitable purposes.

Honors

Kostelecky honor was the genre Kosteletzkya C. Presl from the family of Mallow named (Malvaceae). Some plant species such as the steppe thyme ( Thymus kosteleckyanus Opiz ) were named after him.
