Sterkobilin (often taken from English as Stercobilin ) is one of the breakdown products of hemoglobin . Stercobilin with the brown-red color of the faeces responsible and produced by derivatization of bilirubin . Due to its molecular structure, it belongs to the linear tetrapyrroles ( bile pigments ).
To put it more specifically: Sterkobilin is excreted in the faeces, whereas the processed degradation products of hemoglobin that are excreted in the urine are called urobilinogen or urobilin . Sterkobilin and Urobilin can be used as markers for the biochemical determination of faecal pollution in water.
