Stereographer (profession)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The stereographer acts as an additional member on the set of a 3D film , monitoring the stereoscopic production and staging the 3D effect of the film. He creates the stereoscopic 3D image together and at eye level with the cameraman and director . At the same time, he is responsible for the technical implementation of the film with the help of 3D rigs (for native films) or with the help of digital technical aids (virtual 3D cameras for computer-generated films). In addition to the term stereograph, the spelling stereographer or the English term stereographer is also occasionally used .

Tasks of the stereographer

The stereographer bears the artistic and technical responsibility for the three-dimensional implementation of the film. Depending on the requirements of the planned setting, it specifies the distance between the two cameras of a 3D system and is therefore responsible for the image geometry. He is also responsible for the exact adjustment of the cameras to one another, which is of central importance in 3D films . In addition, he acts in an advisory capacity in many departments, such as make-up and equipment, to draw attention to the special features of 3D film in contrast to 2D film.

As a rule, the stereographer's area of responsibility extends into post-production. In so-called depth grading, he can once again influence the effect of the 3D image and define the connections between the individual film scenes.

By specifying the focal length , 3D vertigo effect and outscreen effects, the stereograph can influence the 3D effect of the individual film scenes.

In the 3D department of a film (“3D Department” or “Stereoscopic Department”), in addition to the stereograph, other 3D specialists such as the Convergence Puller , the 3D Vision Engineer or the Rig Technician work, especially for larger productions .

The importance of the stereograph

Even with some representatives of the film industry, the profession of stereographer is still unknown. This is due to the fact that the profession is still comparatively young and only relevant in the field of 3D film, about which there is generally still a great deal of ignorance in the film industry. However, the importance of the stereograph in the production of a 3D film is gradually gaining recognition. The stereograph is mentioned in the main credits of many productions and even on film posters, which indicates the importance and independence of the stereograph in the creation of the 3D film as a total work of art.

“In recent years, stereography has developed from an originally purely technical to a technical and content-related occupation, because in the end technical decisions have an impact on the content. ' Pina ' by Wim Wenders would be inconceivable without the stereographer Alain Derobe, who made this film. "
