Sterner's bedstraw ( Galium sterneri ) is a species of the red family (Rubiaceae). It is similar to the bedstraw ( Galium pumilum ). The species is named after the Swedish teacher and botanist Rikard Sterner (1891-1956).

features

Sterner's bedstraw is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 15, rarely up to 25 centimeters. This hemicryptophyte grows fast and forms numerous non-flowering square stems . The stem is already branched below the middle, tender and has a diameter of less than 7 millimeters. The leaves are narrow, obverse eilanzettlich and six to eight times as long as wide.

The inflorescence is pyramidal. The flower stalks are 1 to 2 millimeters long. The crown has a diameter of 2.3 to 3.3 mm. The fruit is pointed papillae.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 44.

Occurrence

Sterner's bedstraw is a Nordic-subatlantic, oceanic floral element . It occurs in Great Britain, Ireland, the Faroe Islands, Denmark, Norway and Germany. In Central Europe it occurs only in Denmark and in Germany on Sylt . This species inhabits sandy and stony raw soils on the coast.
