Steve Anderson (2017)

Stephen Nielson "Steve" Anderson (born June 8, 1948 in Fayetteville , Arkansas , † May 10, 2018 in Puerto Montt ) was an American journalist , politician , activist , lawyer and resistance fighter who lived in Chile . In 1991 he founded the Santiago Times , Chile's first English-language newspaper, which he was editor of until 2016.

Living in the USA

Steve Anderson taught at school, worked as a lawyer, and was early on in politics, among other activities. He worked in the office of US Senator J. William Fulbright and later as an advisor to William Vollie Alexander , a House of Representatives for Arkansas.

Life in Chile

In 1987 Anderson finally moved to Chile, where he took part in the resistance against the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet . Among other things, he helped with the Vicaría de la Solidaridad , the union of opposition groups that was under the protection of the Catholic Church.

Until his death he lived on his organic farm in Panitao , near the town of Puerto Montt, near which he was also killed in a car accident. Steve Anderson had a wife and a son.

The Santiago Times

Anderson founded the Chilean Information Project (CHIP), which should report on political, social and environmental issues. One of the newspapers that emerged from the project in 1991 was the English-language newspaper The Santiago Times, which he maintained for decades as editor, journalist and director and which still reports online on topics in Chile and Latin America. Anderson mainly wrote about (environmental) political topics, many of which he knew from an activist point of view.

Political activities

Steve Anderson put his life at the service of politics. Even if his support for the Democratic Party never stopped, his focus shifted more and more to Chilean (local) politics. After the dictatorship, he was very committed to commemorating this time. He also advanced to become a local politician in southern Chile who fought relentlessly for the environment. He earned a lot of respect for his commitment to the Pocuro project, which he was one of the first to draw attention to. One of his main concerns was the protection of the coastline near Puerto Montt, including the demand for the preservation of the Río Trapén and the Patagonia Sin Represas alliance. Anderson was also a member of the Chucao Corporation . For the presidential election in Chile in 2017 , he supported the new left alliance Frente Amplio .

Steve Anderson also became known through a satirical sales campaign for a wooden doll on the YouTube video service . His clip "The Donald Doll" was a message in the US presidential election campaign in 2016 against the Republican candidate.
