Steve Davis (bassist)

Steve Davis (* 1929 in Philadelphia ; † August 21, 1987 there ) was an American jazz bassist who was mainly active around 1960. He was also known by his Islamic name Syeed Luquman Abdul .

Life

Davis has been playing bass around Philadelphia since 1947 with the bands of Joe Sewell , Charles Coker and Calvin Todd. He then performed in New York City with Lester Young and Sonny Stitt . In 1955 he was arrested on the same weekend as Jimmy Heath for possession of heroin . Four years later he was back on the scene. He was married to the singer Khadijah (the sister-in-law of McCoy Tyner ) and was friends with Coltrane. In the summer of 1960 he was a member of John Coltrane's quartet for several months , with whom he performed for several weeks at the New York Jazz Gallery and in Philadelphia, and in October 1961 he was involved in the recording of the album My Favorite Things , among other things .

He was also involved in recordings of Chuck Mangione ( Hey Baby! ), McCoy Tyner Nights of Ballads & Blues , Eddie Jefferson and James Moody . He worked with Moody from 1961 to 1962.
