Joseph Wheeler "Joe" Sewell (born October 9, 1898 in Titus , Alabama , † March 6, 1990 in Mobile , Alabama) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball .

biography

Joe Sewell began his career with the Cleveland Indians in 1920 . With the death of Ray Chapman , who was killed by a litter from Carl Mays , and the injury of his replacement, Ray Lunte, the Indians lacked a shortstop . Sewell, who had not played 100 games in the minor leagues by then, made his debut in the major league. The Indians won with him the title of the American League and the World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers . From the 1921 season he was an undisputed regular player in his position. In 1931 he moved to the New York Yankees , where there was a vacancy on the position of third baseman . Sewell also won a World Series title with the Yankees in 1932 against the Chicago Cubs .

Sewell is still the baseball player with the least strikeouts in the history of the major leagues. There were only 114 strikeouts against him in 7132 at-bats, a record that will certainly be very difficult to break. In the seasons 1925, 1929 and 1933 there were only four strikeouts against him.

After finishing his career in 1933, he worked as a coach for the Yankees for two years. Later he was still a scout for the Indians and as a coach for the University of Alabama , with which he won the title of the SEC in 1968 . In 1977 he was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee .
