Steve Grand
Steve Grand , OBE (born February 12, 1958 ), formerly one of the managing directors and "Director of Technology" of CyberLife Research Ltd., is an English pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence . He became known beyond specialist circles as the inventor of the computer game Creatures , which was also accepted in academic circles as a remarkable simulation of artificial life and whose chief programmer was Grand. A later project of his was to construct a robot that would resemble the cub of an orangutan and learn like a human toddler . He documented this project in “Growing up with Lucy”, the second of his two books to date (mid-2010). Grand's books have not yet been published in German (end of August 2010).
He has lived in Flagstaff, AZ, USA since 2009 . He and his former wife Ann have a son named Christopher.
Awards and grants
- On March 7, 2000, Queen Elizabeth II recognized Steve Grand for his work on the Creatures program by appointing him Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) .
- In 2001, his book Creation: Life and How to Make It was nominated for The Aventis Prizes for Science Books , an annual award for the best accessible scientific book and the best scientific children's book of the previous year by the Royal Society , the UK's National Academy of Sciences.
- In November 2002, Steve Grand became a laureate / scholar of NESTA, an institution established by British Parliament decree in 1998 to increase Britain's creative and innovative fortune. NESTA recognized him with the words "Steve has been described as Britain's most intelligent man, and also as one of the 18 scientists who can most likely be expected to revolutionize our lives in the 21st century." ("Steve has been called Britain's most intelligent man, as well as one of the 18 scientists most likely to revolutionize our lives during the 21st century.") The scholarship was intended to give Steve Grand "the freedom to focus on the eyesight, to improve the hearing, muscles and brain of his robot Lucy ”.
