Stephen Paul "Steve" Piper (born November 2, 1953 in Brighton ; † December 2017 ) was an English football player who played in the lower leagues of the Football League for Brighton & Hove Albion and Portsmouth FC in the 1970s .
Career
Piper attended Longhill School in Rottingdean and was a selection player for Brighton and Sussex as a student and also took part in a selection game for the English student national team. After playing for the Brighton & Hove Albion youth team , he received his first professional contract in September 1972. His competitive debut in the Second Division in November 1972 (0-1 against Burnley FC ) was followed by nine more missions in his first season, but only one victory. For Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of the season as bottom of the table was relegation to the Third Division , in which they fought for relegation two seasons first under Brian Clough and then under Peter Taylor . Meanwhile, Piper had become an integral part of the team and came mostly as a central defender or right -back used.
1976 Piper was brought forward by the new coach Alan Mullery in midfield, where he shone as a ball conqueror and played all 46 league games (4 goals) of the 1976/77 season when Brighton managed to return to the Second Division as runner-up. There, too, he was seeded at the start of the season and scored three goals in 15 games before the signing of Paul Clark heralded his end at Brighton. At his own request, he was put on the transfer list and in February 1978 signed the nearby third division FC Portsmouth Piper for a transfer fee of £ 20,000. Portsmouth was in a relegation battle and only succeeded in its twelfth use the first victory, the club rose at the end of the 1977/78 season from bottom of the table in the fourth division . There he was still part of the permanent staff before he suffered a serious knee injury in a game against Darlington FC in November 1978 . After a successful operation, he made his comeback in the reserve team from Portsmouth, but there the injury broke up again and thus ended his professional career.
In non-league football , Piper was still active in the following years for a variety of clubs in the local Sussex County League and appeared at Worthing FC and Littlehampton Town as an assistant coach. He earned his living in the insurance industry after his football career.
