Steven Gellman (composer)

Steven Gellman (born September 16, 1947 in Toronto ) is a Canadian composer , pianist and music teacher.

Gellman began composing at the age of nine. From 1958 he received piano and composition lessons from Samuel Dolin at the Royal Conservatory of Music . In 1964, at the opening of the University of Toronto's Edward Johnson Building, he played his own piano concerto with the CBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Boyd Neel . From 1965 to 1968 he studied at the Juilliard School of Music with Luciano Berio , Vincent Persichetti and Roger Sessions and attended summer courses with Darius Milhaud at the Aspen Music Festival and School , from 1973 to 1976 he was a student of Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire de Paris .

Gellman has been teaching at the University of Ottawa since 1976 , where u. a. Roddy Ellias , Colin Mack and Denis Schingh studied with him. In 1964 he was the first Canadian composer to receive the International BMI Award for his piano concerto . In 1970 Mythos was awarded the UNESCO prize for the best work by a composer under the age of 25. In the 1970s a. a. Commissioned compositions for pianist Angela Hewitt and the Canadian Brass Ensemble ; In 1978 he composed Deux Tapisseries for the Festival de Besançon for the 70th birthday of Olivier Messiaen on behalf of the French government .

Gellman composed Awakening (1983) and Universe Symphony (1986) for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . He composed the keyboard triptych for Jon Kimura Parker . The Canticles of St Francis was commissioned by the National Arts Center Orchestra and the Cantata Singers of Ottawa in 1989 for the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Red Cross . His Sonata for Cello and Piano was premiered in 1994 by Desmond Hoebig and Andrew Tunis , and in 2003 the Musica Camerata gave the world premiere of his piano quartet.
