Steven McKnight
Steven Lanier McKnight (* 1949 ) is an American biochemist and molecular biologist . He is best known for his work on the systems that cells and tissues use to respond to a critical supply of oxygen.
Live and act
McKnight earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1974 with a grade summa cum laude and a PhD , also in biology, from the University of Virginia in 1977 . From 1977 to 1992 he was a research fellow at the Carnegie Institution of Washington in Washington, DC , interrupted from an activity from 1981 to 1983 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle , Washington . From 1988 to 1992 he also conducted research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute . Between 1991 and 1996 he was director of research at Tularik Inc. , which he co-founded and which was sold to Amgen in 2004. McKnight has been Professor and Chair of Biochemistry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas since 1996 .
McKnight deals with the regulation of gene expression . In particular, he was able to clarify how the hypoxia-induced factor (HIF) is regulated via the oxygen supply.
