Steven Jakob Matz (born May 29, 1991 in Stony Brook , New York ) is an American baseball player in Major League Baseball . The left-handed starting pitcher was drafted 72nd in the second round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the New York Mets , where he made his MLB debut in 2015 and has been active ever since.

Career

Matz was active until the Entry Draft at Ward Melville High School, which is close to his hometown. He didn't get his first professional contract with the Mets until August 15, 2009, the last day before the deadline for amateurs elected in June. At the same time, Matz complained of pain in the elbow, which turned out to be the result of a torn ligament in the ulna . Due to this typical pitcher injury, Matz had to undergo Tommy John surgery in 2010 , which usually involves a 12 to 14 month break.

Matz played his first professional game in the minor league in 2012 for the Kingsport Mets, a rookie-level team in the franchise . In 2013 he moved up a level and pitched for the Savannah Sand Gnats and was then used in the following year at both the Advanced A-Level with the St. Lucie Mets and the AA-Level with the Binghamton Mets . He made it to the top of the minor league class in 2015 when he was transferred to the Las Vegas 51s , the Mets' AAA team.

In the 2015 season , Matz finally made his debut in the Major League on June 28, 2015. He came to six missions in the regular season , in which he could book 4 wins and remained without loss . As a batsman, he also got five RBI . He then started three times in the playoffs. In the 2015 National League Division Series , he suffered his first loss in the Mets jersey in Game 4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers . Both in the National League Championship Series 2015 in Game 4 against the Chicago Cubs , as well as in Game 4 of the World Series 2015 against the Kansas City Royals , Matz got no entry in his pitching record .

Since the beginning of the 2016 season , Matz has been an integral part of the Mets' starting rotation. In May 2016 he was named Rookie of the Month of the National League after 4-0 wins in 31 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.83. By the end of the season he made 22 appearances and finished the season with a record of 9: 8. Due to an injury, Matz only made 13 starts in the MLB in 2017 and played his worst season to date with a high ERA of 6.08 and only two wins out of seven losses.

In the following seasons of 2018 and 2019 , Steven Matz was again permanently part of the starting rotation and came to 30 starts each for the Mets. In addition, it was used twice as a relief in 2019. For the first time since 2016, he was able to finish this year with a positive balance of 11:10. On July 27, 2019, in a 3-0 home win against the Pittsburgh Pirates , Matz was on the mound for a full 9 innings for the first time and was able to record the first shutout of his career.
