Steven Universe: The Motion Picture (Original title: Steven Universe: The Movie ) is an American animated - TV movie of Rebecca Sugar , of the television series Steven Universe followed (2013-2019). The musical film premiered on September 2, 2019 on the US broadcaster Cartoon Network . The German premiere took place on May 30, 2020 on the German branch Cartoon Networks, but the film was already available for purchase on May 4, 2020 on several streaming platforms in German. The action of the franchise continues after the film in Steven Universe Future .

The film takes place two years after the last episode of the fifth season of the series . The most important events of the series are summarized in a book at the beginning of the film. Steven is now 16 years old and is in the home world. Despite the requests of the Diamonds, he decides to stay on earth. There all the gems, whom he has restored to their old form with the help of the Diamonds, are building their own small town where they want to live in peace.

But the peace is tarnished when a strange gem named Spinel appears in the sky over Beach City and immediately challenges the Crystal Gems to fight. They are all damaged by their scythe-like weapon and transformed back into their crystals, but when they take on physical form again, they no longer recognize Steven. In addition, Steven seems to have lost his powers, such as summoning his shield. With the help of his other friends, Bismuth, Lapis Lazuli and Peridot, he tries to bring back the memories of his friends. They also discover that the drill that Spinel initially rammed into the ground slowly but surely pumps a poison into the ground, thus destroying life, which must be stopped within 41 hours.

When Pearl regains her memory, she tells that Spinel was once Pink Diamond's playmate, but the truth is only revealed when Steven and Spinel teleport into Pink's garden via a warp field. When Pink Diamond was supposed to take over the earth, she left Spinel in the garden, which made her so sorry. This memory brings Spinel back to his senses. However, Steven can convince her to leave the past behind and put everything back in order. But then Spinel feels deceived and lets all of the poison from the drill flow over Strandstadt. While the Crystal Gems, along with Connie and Leo, bring the residents to safety, Steven tries to calm Spinel down and regains his strength in the process. When Spinel accidentally destroys the drill during the fight, Steven saves her from the subsequent explosion.

Finally, Spinel Pink Diamond takes its original place in the homeworld. In the end, Gems and Humans rebuild Beach City and clean up all the havoc.
