Steven van de Velde (born August 8, 1994 in The Hague ) is a Dutch beach volleyball player .

Career

Van de Velde won the Dutch U20 championship in 2011 with Jeffrey van Wijk . In 2012, the duo took 17th place at the U23 European Championship in Assen . Then the two Dutchmen finished ninth at the U20 European Championship in Hartberg . In 2013 van de Velde formed a new duo with Daan Spijkers . Spijkers / van de Velde took 17th and 25th place at the Fuzhou Open and the Grand Slam in Shanghai. With Michiel van Dorsten , van de Velde took 25th place at the Grand Slam in The Hague . Van de Velde took part in the 2013 World Cup in Stare Jabłonki did not participate, as both Spijkers and van Dorsten competed there with a different partner.

In February 2016, van de Velde confessed to the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl in England in August 2014 . He met the girl on Facebook and, knowing her age, had sexual intercourse with her several times. Under English law, this counts as rape even if the girl gives her consent . Van der Velde was sentenced to four years in prison. He was serving his sentence in a Dutch prison and was released after a year.

In May 2017 van de Velde continued his beach volleyball career. Since 2019 he has been playing alongside Olympic participant Christiaan Varenhorst . In July 2020 he won the first tournament of the Comdirect Beach Tour 2020 with Lukas Pfretzschner in Düsseldorf .
