Stijn Stijnen (born April 7, 1981 in Hasselt ) is a former Belgian football goalkeeper with Italian roots.
career
Stijnen came in 1999 from the youth of KS Kermt-Hasselt as a substitute goalkeeper in the professional squad of the club. A year later he moved to Club Bruges , where he was initially a substitute behind Dany Verlinden and later Tomislav Butina . On April 18, 2003 he made his debut in the First Division in the game against KRC Genk , which was lost 3-0.
Stijnen experienced his breakthrough in the 2005/06 season when he had to replace the injured Butina several times. After several good games, at the end of the season he took his place in goal and national coach René Vandereycken also noticed him. He made his debut for the Belgian national team in the 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia .
In February 2011, Club Brugge Stijnens prematurely terminated the contract that ran until 2015 after it was pulled over other players in Internet forums. After that he was without a club until the summer before he joined Beerschot AC in early August 2011 and ended his active career there in the summer of 2013.
Subsequently, he returned to his training association KS Kermt-Hasselt , where he initially acted as president and supported it financially with his family and saved it from liquidation. After he gave up his post to the interim chairman Bart Casters in November 2015 , he followed his father, the former professional footballer Jean-Pierre “Jempi” Stijnen , into the post of sports director of the Belgian third division team.
