Daniel "Dany" Verlinden (born August 15, 1963 in Aarschot ) is a former Belgian football goalkeeper .
Career
In the club
Dany Verlinden started his professional career at Lierse SK when he was seventeen . From 1980 to 1988, the goalkeeper completed a total of 204 games for Lierse. After moving to Club Bruges , he became the goalkeeper in his second season. He managed to stay clean for a total of 1390 minutes between March 3, 1990 and September 26, 1990. This performance is the record not only in the Belgian league, but in all top leagues subordinate to UEFA to this day.
He also held the record as the oldest player used in the UEFA Champions League for almost three years . At the age of 40 years and 116 days, Verlinden played in the Champions League for Bruges in December 2003. The record was exceeded by Alessandro Costacurta on November 21, 2006. The AC Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days old at the time.
Dany Verlinden ended his career at Club Bruges in the summer of 2004 at the age of 41. In sixteen years he won five championships and five cup finals with Bruges. From 2004 to 2012 Verlinden was goalkeeping coach at Club Brugge; afterwards he started working in the same position at the Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab in 2012 . However, he only held this position for a year before taking on the position of goalkeeping coach at Club Africain Tunis .
In the national team
Verlinden took part in the U-18 European Championship in Germany in 1981 and played two full-length games there. In total, he was called up to the Belgian U-18 national team 16 times and was used in each of these matches. Furthermore, from 1979 to 1982 he made 22 appointments to the U-19 national team, for which he completed a total of 18 international matches. From 1982 to 1986 he was finally able to record eleven drafts into the U-21 national team, of which he was used in seven games.
He later belonged to the Belgian national team at the 1994 World Cup and the 1998 World Cup as the third goalkeeper, but remained unused. Between 1993 and 1998 he was called up to 15 in the senior national team. On March 25, 1998 Verlinden completed his only international match when he guarded the goal in the 2-2 draw in the friendly against Norway over the full game.
