Stills Alone is the ninth solo studio album by American rock musician Stephen Stills . As already indicated in the title, Stills recorded the album alone without a band. On most of the pieces he sings to the acoustic guitar , but on Isn't It So and Just Isn't Like You he also plays the electric guitar and on Amazonia percussion .

Stills Alone was the artist's first album that was not released on a major record label. Stills published his solo albums on Atlantic Records until 1974 , recorded three albums for Columbia Records between 1975 and 1978 and finally returned to Atlantic in 1984, where he produced a flop with the album Right By You . While all of his solo albums, with the exception of a few tracks, were characterized by working with a large band and numerous instruments, Stills Alone stood out due to its minimalist arrangement. Above all, the album emphasizes Stills' qualities as an outstanding guitarist , with critics having to state that his voice had become very distinctive, but also less extensive. This is particularly evident in the cover version of the Beatles song In My Life or in comparison to his singing on the song Singin 'Call , which was composed in 1971 during the recording of his album Stephen Stills 2 and only now - twenty years later - was released on Stills Alone in an acoustic version.

Perhaps the most important track on the album is the song Treetop Flyer , which is about a pilot from the Vietnam War who now uses his flying skills to make money as a smuggler. The piece was released as a single and was unsuccessful in the charts, but it developed into one of the most popular songs in live performances by the artist, who had the line " I'll fly any cargo that you can pay to run " on the Stage later changed to " I'll fly whiskey for you; most anything but guns " (heard on his live album Live at Shepherd's Bush , 2009). An early demo version of the song has been available as a bonus track on the album Just Roll Tape - April 26th, 1968 since 2007 , and another live version can be found on the Crosby, Stills and Nash record Live in LA , which was also released in 2007. The American singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne stated in an interview that he had even started a career as a professional musician through the song Treetop Flyer .

Stills Alone was not a commercial success. After Stills' solo albums since the late 1970s steadily deteriorated in the eyes of critics and fans, the record marked a first artistic high point in a long time and was nothing less than a musical revelation for many fans. The album is no longer available and is therefore difficult (or very expensive) to get.
