The Stockerauer Au is a nature reserve in northern Lower Austria . It extends south from Stockerau to the Danube .

The wetland was declared a nature reserve in 1999. With a size of over 346 hectares , it serves not only for nature conservation but also for drinking water supply for the city of Stockerau and as a recreation area. There is an extensive network of hiking trails for this.

The original wetland area has slowly dried up over time due to the deepening of the Danube in Vienna. Today the floodplain is irrigated via the artificially created pouring channel that was built during the construction of the Greifenstein power station . The casting channel begins four kilometers below Altenwörth and flows through the alluvial forest over a length of 42 kilometers. It flows back into the Danube six kilometers below the Greifenstein power plant. The pouring tunnel was completed in 1984. The water from the pouring tunnel, however, does not flow directly from the Danube, but is filtered through the gravel bed and pressed into the artificial water. Only when there is a flood is the pouring channel directly supplied with the Danube water via specially created overflow sections. As a result, constantly changing water levels are achieved in the Au, which result in Au-typical vegetation and guarantee a habitat for numerous animal species. The water quality of the pouring channel is now consistently quality class 2.

41 fish species live in the waters of the Stockerauer Au, 15 of which are endangered in Austria . So you can find bitterling , wolffish , sable , the perch-like nerd , Schrätzer and Zingel as well as the predatory fish eel rod , schied , pike and catfish .

Due to the abundance of fish, however, numerous species of birds were attracted. Of the 70 endangered animal species, the kingfisher , hen harrier , cormorant , silver and gray heron , red and black kite , white stork , sea eagle and osprey should be mentioned.
