Stoffel van Viegen

Stoffel van Viegen (born February 3, 1916 in Utrecht , † September 12, 1988 ) was a Dutch organist and music teacher . From 1937 to 1986 he was the cathedral organist at Utrecht Cathedral .

Life

Van Viegen had been a church organist since he was twelve. He received his first music lessons from Karl Hamm in Venlo . After his return to Utrecht he continued his studies with Willem Petri , later with Sem Dresden , Hendrik Andriessen and Adriaan Engels . In 1936 he became organist at the Dutch Reformed Wilhelmina Church and in 1937 at the Julianakirche in Utrecht. In 1937 - only 21 years old - he successfully applied as organist at the Utrecht Cathedral and thus prevailed against well-known competitors such as Feike Asma , Cornelis J. Bute , Mees van Huis and Piet van Egmond . After almost 50 years of activity, he retired in 1986 and gave his farewell concert on December 27, 1986.

During his career, Stoffel van Viegen made several records on the Utrecht cathedral organ. He also gave regular concerts for the NCRV broadcaster . From the 1940s he was the main teacher at the Conservatory in Utrecht. His students included Charles de Wolff , Herman van Vliet , Willem Hendrik Zwart , Jacques van den Dool and Gert Muts .
