Stomatium is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name is derived from the Greek word stroma for 'mouth' and refers to the serrated leaves that resemble an open mouth.

description

The species of the genus Stomatium grow compact and often become turf-shaped with age. They are often anisophyllic, especially when they are young . Its olive-green to gray-brown leaves are triangular to fairly flat. Older leaves are isophyll. The leaves usually have a more or less pronounced, smooth or toothed keel. There are usually small, soft, white teeth on the leaf margin.

The flowers are on rather short peduncles, giving the impression that they have arisen directly from the leaves. There are five sepals . The petals are yellow, white or pink in color. Inside the flower, they are often shorter and quite narrow. The flowers open in the late afternoon or early evening and stay open until around midnight. The flowering period extends from early spring to early summer.

The five-way, very rarely six-way capsule fruits are spherical to bell-shaped at their base. The source bars always run parallel. The flap wings are wide. Closure bodies are missing. The fruits contain seeds that are 0.6 to 0.95 millimeters long and 0.45 to 0.75 millimeters wide .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Stomatium is distributed in Lesotho and in South Africa in the western districts of the Eastern Cape Province , the southwestern districts of the Free State Province and the northern and northwestern districts of the Western Cape Province . The species usually grow on plains or very gentle slopes on fine-grained soils of various origins or in slate crevices. The annual rainfall is more than 100 millimeters and falls mainly in March and November.

The first description of the genre by Gustav Schwantes was published in 1926. The type species is Stomatium suaveolens . The genus Stomatium includes the following species:
