Stoneleigh (villa)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stoneleigh is a villa in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also part of a more comprehensive category B monument ensemble.

description

The villa was built in 1901 to a design by the architect Henry Edward Clifford . The client was the stockbroker Joseph Turner . A retirement home was established in Stoneleigh in the 1950s. Since 1901, the villa has been the subject of four specialist publications.

Stoneleigh is on Cleveden Drive off the Great Western Road ( A82 ). The villa is built into a steep slope and therefore has two to three floors. It is designed in the Elizabethan style, but also shows motifs from Jacobean architecture . On the north-facing front, a massive porte-cochère emerges on the left . It is designed with Ionic pilasters , sweeping cornices and elaborately ornamented stone balustrade . Just like the Art Nouveau entrance portal with its massive keystone , it is made with basket arches . The arched windows are designed with stone window posts or tracery . A three-story stair tower with a square floor plan rises to the right. Various illuminations and bay windows emerge from the irregular facades . Several components end with crenellated parapets. Some of the windows are coupled . Flat wings go off on both sides. The final roofs are slated.

The interior is partly designed in the Jacobean style and partly in the style of the Glasgow School . The elaborate carvings, wood paneling and marble chimneys are particularly noteworthy. Henry Arthur Payne and Mary Newill designed the leaded glass windows . The fairy-tale cameos in the hall are designed in the style of Edward Burne-Jones . Presumably they are from Newill.
