Stop Draggin 'My Heart Around is about a woman who sees a burden in her relationship and therefore wants to break up with her partner, although there is still a strong bond between them. The text of the song is presented from the point of view of the woman sung by Stevie Nicks, who confronts her partner with accusations, while the male part sung by Tom Petty only appears together with Nicks in the chorus, with the exception of a text passage he sings. The slow and melancholy melody was described as “dark and eerie” among other things.

Emergence

Originally, Petty and Campbell wrote Stop Draggin 'My Heart Around for the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album Hard Promises , which was released in May 1981, but then discarded it. Eventually I got in touch with Stevie Nicks, with whom Tom Petty was also a private friend. She had previously asked Petty at a meeting to write a song for her first solo album, which he did not take seriously. Instead, Nicks sang the song Insider on the Hard Promises album together with Petty in a duet . This was the first time the two musicians worked together.

It was decided to release Stop Draggin 'My Heart Around as a duet on Nick's album Bella Donna . Nicks was not in the studio with the Heartbreakers because they only sang their part over an existing recording by the band.

It was only for the music video for Stop Draggin 'My Heart Around that was produced for the single release that Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty stood together with the Heartbreakers in the studio. This video was among the first to air on MTV on August 1, 1981 . The TV station went on the air the same day and showed Stop Draggin 'My Heart Around in 25th position. Stevie Nicks said he was dissatisfied with the video, which looked badly done because the lip movements were not right and neither singer had ever recorded a music video before.

Chart placements and live performances

Stop Draggin 'My Heart Around reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the highest chart position in Stevie Nicks' solo career. The song even reached second place on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs charts . The single also achieved great success in Australia (tenth place), Canada (fifth) and South Africa (fourth), while it only came in 50th place in the United Kingdom.

Stop Draggin 'My Heart Around was a regular part of the solo program at Stevie Nicks concerts. In the following years she also sang the song several times in a duet with Tom Petty. This was most recently the case on July 9, 2017 as part of the British Summer Time Festival in London's Hyde Park . Less than three months later, Tom Petty died at the age of 66.
