The Poitiers tram ( French : Tramway de Poitiers ) served urban transport in the city of Poitiers , the capital of the Vienne department , for almost fifty years .

history

A horse-drawn tram was opened in Poitiers as early as 1895 and ran until the summer of 1914. The steep stretches in the high city could only be overcome by an electric tram . On September 24, 1899, two lines of the Compagnie des tramways de Poitiers - TP , which belonged to the company Omnium lyonnais des chemins de fer et des tramways , started operating.

From Place d'Armes in the city center, line A went to the train station (1.0 km) and line B to Trois Bourdons (2.4 km). From September 5, 1903, line C was added, which connected the city center with Pierre Levée (2.5 km). A total of 13 railcars and four sidecars were used on this meter-gauge network of six kilometers in length.

Line A was replaced by an omnibus from 1937 to 1939 and by a trolleybus from August 9, 1943 . From January 25, 1948, this also took the place of the other two tram lines.

Since March 4, 1965, only diesel buses have been serving city traffic in Poitiers .
