The tram Verneuil-l'Étang-Melun ( French: Tramway de Verneuil-l'Étang à Melun ) was a steam tram from Verneuil-l'Étang to Melun in France . The line had a length of 18.390 kilometers and was operated from 1901 to 1950 by the Société générale des chemins de fer économiques . It reached the peak of its passenger numbers in 1914 before the outbreak of war, which severely impaired traffic. Between the two world wars, bus traffic created considerable competition, so that the operation was no longer profitable. Before it was shut down and dismantled, the line was still used at times by the sugar industry .
