Maincy is a French commune with 1,732 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-et-Marne in the region Ile-de-France . It lies on the French Brie plain, about 6 km east of Melun and about 50 km south of Paris .

The history of the old village is closely interwoven with that of the 17th century Vaux-le-Vicomte castle , whose park forms the western boundary of the municipality. The old stone bridge that Paul Cézanne used as a motif, an old water mill, the washing area and numerous houses in the typical Brie style bear witness to earlier times. The church, built in the 12th century, was remodeled in the 17th century by Louis Le Vau , the builder of the local palace, who was later called to Versailles.

Tapestry Manufactory

The former monastery founded by the Carmelites from Melun is particularly worth seeing , in which the Chief Financial Officer Nicolas Fouquet founded a workshop for the manufacture of Haute Lisse tapestries , which was active from 1658 to around 1668. Under the direction of Charles Le Brun , around 300 workers and 19 Flemish craftsmen were employed here, initially primarily to create the precious furnishings of Fouquet's castle. After the superintendent fell out of favor in 1661 , the "Manufacture de tapisserie de haute lisse privilégiée" , which had meanwhile been granted privileges by King Louis XIV "which we know today as a tapestry manufactory .

The whereabouts of the works is largely unknown. The Vaux-le-Vicomte castle itself has only one door curtain in which Fouquet's coat of arms was replaced by that of his successor in office, Jean-Baptiste Colbert . Only recently (as of 2006) the current owner of the castle had the knitting factory restored to its old state at great expense.
