history

Patrick Cruickshank , who had made his fortune in Jamaica , bought the nearly 800  hectare estate in 1775. His brother Alexander inherited Stracathro and entrusted the Scottish architect Archibald Simpson with the construction of Stracathro House, which was built around 1827. Two years before his death, James Campbell , the former Lord Provost of Glasgow and father of British Prime Minister Henry Campbell-Bannerman , bought the property. In 1938 Stracathro House was leased to the government, who built the Stracathro Hospital there. The mansion served as the residence of the staff. In 2003 Stracathro House was sold and serves as a family home.

description

Stracathro House is about four kilometers southeast of Edzell and six kilometers northeast of Brechin on the Cruick Water stream, which flows into the North Esk at the level of the manor house . The two-story mansion is symmetrical and designed in the Palladian style. A portico with six Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment juts out in the middle of the main facade, which is exposed to the northwest . The wings extending on both sides are similar, but designed more simply.

The stables are to the west of the manor house. They were built during the construction of Stracathro House and are also designed by Simpson. The buildings enclose an inner courtyard, which is accessible via an arched doorway on the south side. The arch closes with a triglyph frieze and cornices . An octagonal pigeon tower rises on the north side .
