The striuntius lineatus ( Striuntius lineatus , Syn. : Puntius lineatus , Barbus lineatus ) is a freshwater fish from the family of carp fish . It occurs on the Malay Peninsula , Sumatra and West Borneo ( Indonesia ) in swamps and standing open waters with dense vegetation and is quite common in waters with clear black water .

features

The barbless line barbel has an elongated, laterally clearly flattened body of a yellowish-gray basic color with a silvery sheen. It is very similar in shape and color to the line barbel ( Desmopuntius johorensis ), but has no or only a single pair of rudimentary maxillary barbels , which are much shorter than the diameter of the eye, and a groove behind the fleshy lip of the lower jaw (only in specimens longer than 2 cm) which distinguishes them from all other Southeast Asian barbels. The mouth is slightly below.

The barbel line barbel differs from other Southeast Asian barbel formerly assigned to Puntius by its color pattern consisting of 4 to 6 dark brown to bluish longitudinal stripes, which, unlike the barbel line, is present in all ages. Twelve scales are counted around the tail stalk. The first ray of the dorsal fin is black, the last unbranched dorsal fin ray is sawed behind. The sideline is complete. The number of lateral line scales provided with pores is 25 to 28. In a transverse row between the base of the dorsal fin and the ventral midline, ½5 / 1 / 5½ scales are counted in front of the base of the ventral fin . Rows of small papillae are found on the sides of the snout and in the eye region. These rows of papillae are absent from all other Southeast Asian barbels with the exception of Oliotius . On the first gill arch there are 17 to 20 gill rakes (3 to 15 in the other genera).

Systematics

The barbelless line barbel was described in 1904 by the German ichthyologist Georg Duncker as Barbus lineatus , later assigned to the collective genus Puntius . In November 2013, the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat assigned them to the monotypical genus Striuntius, which was created especially for the barbel line barbel . The generic name was composed of striatus (= striped) and puntius .
