from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The power outage in July 2019 in the Upper West Side of Manhattan was an interruption in the supply of electrical energy by the energy supplier Consolidated Edison from 7 p.m. to midnight on July 13, 2019 in this district.

The outage occurred on the anniversary of the 1977 power blackout in New York , which left around 9 million customers without power.

Effects

The outage began around 6:47 p.m. EST and left 73,000 customers in the Upper West Side without power for about three hours. It covered six power sectors and covered an area of around 30 blocks in Midtown Manhattan , from Times Square to 72nd Street and from Fifth Avenue to the Hudson River . The areas affected by the failure included Times Square and parts of the Rockefeller Center . Most Broadway theaters have canceled their shows for that evening.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) reported that the entire New York City Subway , the city's subway system, was affected by the outage. Some of the subway complexes had no lights and operations on several lines were affected. Limited operations were available on lines 1, 2 and 3 (west side), as well as lines 4, 5 and 6 (east side) and on line 7 from Manhattan to Queens . The New York subway advised passengers to take buses instead of using the subway.

The blackout also affected a Jennifer Lopez concert at Madison Square Garden . In addition, several Broadway shows were canceled and spontaneously resumed outdoors.

causes

Consolidated Edison assumed a mechanical defect as the cause, while the fire service assumed a transformer fire.

Restoration of power supply

The restoration of the power supply began around 10:00 p.m. and was fully completed in all six sectors shortly before midnight on July 13, 2019.
