Stuart S. Antman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stuart S. Antman (born June 2, 1939 in Brooklyn ) is an American mathematician who deals with continuum mechanics and nonlinear analysis .

Antman studied at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Bachelor 1961) and the University of Minnesota , where he received his doctorate in mechanics in 1965 ( Dynamic theory of hyperelastic rods ). As a post-doctoral student he was at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University , where he became an assistant professor in 1967 and then an associate professor. In 1969/70 he was a visiting scholar at Oxford University. In 1972 he became a professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland at College Park. Since 2001 he has been Distinguished University Professor there. He was visiting professor in Bonn, Leipzig, Hong Kong, Heriot-Watt-University, Brown University, the École Polytechnique in Paris, the Autonomous University of Mexico, the University of Paris VI, the TU Darmstadt, the University of Paris-South and the University of Wisconsin.

He deals with nonlinear equations in continuum mechanics (nonlinear elasticity theory), theory of (visco-) elastic shells and elastic columns, bifurcations and stability theory of nonlinear differential equations.

From 1989 to 1999 he was editor of the Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis and since 1996 of the Journal of Elasticity.

In 1978/79 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. In 1987 he received the Lester Randolph Ford Award . In 1999 he received the Theodore von Kármán Prize from SIAM . In 1997 he received the David Alcaraz Medal from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
