The Studierendenwerk Berlin (spelling: studierendenWERK BERLIN ) is the student union responsible for 20 universities and the Charité in Berlin and looks after around 170,000 students . The largest supervised universities are the Free University of Berlin with around 40,000, the Humboldt University of Berlin with around 37,000 and the Technical University of Berlin with around 35,000 students. The institution founded in 1973 as Studentenwerk Berlin has had its current name since April 18, 2017 .

After the end of the First World War, various self-help associations were set up at many university locations, including Berlin, to improve the economic situation of students after the First World War. In 1921 the local economic aid institutions of the German Student Union (from 1929: Deutsches Studentenwerk ) merged, which was transferred to the Reichsstudentenwerk in 1934 during the Nazi era and dissolved by the Allies in 1945.

After the Second World War were western part of Berlin , the first student union Charlottenburg e. V. and in 1948 the Studentenwerk der Freie Universität Berlin eV was founded as private associations. In the course of assuming sovereign tasks with the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG), the Studentenwerk Berlin was founded as an institution under public law on April 1, 1973 .

In the eastern part of Berlin, social tasks were performed by the universities themselves until German reunification.

In 2010, the Studierendenwerk Berlin was awarded the integration prize for the exemplary employment of severely disabled people in the state of Berlin . As a family-friendly company, the Studierendenwerk Berlin has been certified by the Hertie Foundation in the work and family audit since 2009, and was recertified in 2013 and 2016. In 2015, student union facilities at six locations were certified according to the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme .

The amendment to the Student Union Act of February 25, 2016 (now the Student Union Act) renamed the Berlin Student Union with effect from March 5, 2016. Since April 18, 2017, the institution officially bears the name "Studierendenwerk Berlin".

The tasks of the Studierendenwerk Berlin include the provision of inexpensive student catering in a total of 21 canteens , 18 cafeterias and 18 coffee bars. Around 36,500 guests are catered for every day. Another focus is the provision of housing for German and especially foreign students. The Studierendenwerk operates 33 dormitories with 9,378 places.

The other fields of activity of the Studierendenwerk Berlin include advice on issues relating to student financing and the processing of BAföG applications. The Studierendenwerk offers free social services for students, such as B. social counseling and psychological-psychotherapeutic counseling. It also offers assistance for students with disabilities, students from abroad or in emergencies. In addition, the Studierendenwerk operates seven day-care centers with 641 places. It also assists students in finding part-time jobs . To this end, the Heinzelmännchen job agency existed for decades until the end of 2019, and since 2020 the company has been involved in the Stellenwerk portal of the University of Hamburg.

The promotion of student culture is another area of ​​work. One focus is on looking after the student clubs in the student dormitories , in the student cabaret festival “Mixit - the cabaret evening with audience award”, the finale of which takes place annually in December, and the “Food + Culture” event series. In addition, the Studierendenwerk makes its premises available for student artists (exhibition series "podiuMensa", "ParisXBerlin"). In the student house on Steinplatz, the event location “Freiraum” is being developed and used for numerous cultural events (concerts by the student union choir “Unität - Chor für alle”, etc.).

A total of 986 employees, 390 of them part-time, generate an annual turnover of over 49 million euros. In addition to these own sales, the company finances its services primarily from student contributions - the so-called student union contribution (2016: € 51.69, 2017: € 54.09), which is collected by the universities as part of the semester contribution - and from grants from the state Berlin.

The Studierendenwerk Berlin publishes the campus magazine Werkblatt every two months .
