The Studentenwerk OstNiedersachsen is a non-profit institution under public law with its headquarters in Braunschweig . The area of ​​responsibility extends over the entire region of East Lower Saxony. Around 60,000 students from universities and technical colleges are looked after at ten locations in Braunschweig, Buxtehude , Clausthal-Zellerfeld ( TU Clausthal ), Hildesheim , Holzminden , Lüneburg , Salzgitter , Suderburg , Wolfenbüttel and Wolfsburg .

It was founded in 1922 as the economic office of the Braunschweig Technical University and renamed the Braunschweig Student Union in 1933. After the merger with the Studentenwerk Clausthal in 2007, it has been called the Studentenwerk OstNiedersachsen since 2011.

The offers of the Studentenwerk include catering for the students, e.g. B. in canteens and cafeterias , the rental of dormitories, support with student financing, advice on financial, personal, social or legal problems, child care as well as cultural offers and funding opportunities.

The Studentenwerk OstNiedersachsen employs a total of around 500 people and is the largest of the five student unions in Lower Saxony. As one of a total of 57 members, it belongs to the umbrella organization Deutsches Studentenwerk eV, based in Berlin, which represents the interests of students in Germany in particular on socio-political issues. The subsidiary Hochschulservice OstNiedersachsen GmbH was founded in 2011 and employs around 110 people. Sönke Nimz has been the managing director since 2006.

The Studentenwerk operates 11 cafeterias and 14 other catering facilities such as cafeterias, bistros, coffee bars and vending vehicles and supplies students with various lunch options, snacks and desserts at the locations. The day care centers of the student union and other providers are also supplied by the canteens.

Living

The Studentenwerk operates 37 dormitories and offers a total of around 4,700 rooms for students in Braunschweig, Buxtehude, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Hildesheim, Suderburg, Wolfenbüttel and Wolfsburg. In addition, guest apartments are available to visitors and employees of the universities.

Study funding

The Student Financing Department with its five advice centers supports students in financing their studies: It processes applications in accordance with the Federal Training Assistance Act ( BAföG ) and provides information about alternative financing options, such as B. Student Loans.

The Studentenwerk offers various advisory services to help students in their everyday studies: psychosocial / psychotherapeutic advice helps with psychological and personal problems, and social advice helps with questions about the financing of studies. The student union loan fund is also located here. Legal advice (together with the ASten of the universities) can be used for legal matters. All advisory services are free of charge.

At the locations in Braunschweig, Hildesheim, Lüneburg and Wolfenbüttel, the Studentenwerk looks after up to 250 children from the age of two months in six day-care centers. In Clausthal-Zellerfeld, a childminder looks after the children of students. In Braunschweig and Hildesheim there are additional childcare options available for parents in the form of flexible childcare. This is financially supported by the universities, and there students with children have the opportunity to have their offspring looked after in the afternoons and during the holidays.

Culture

The three cultural offices in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Hildesheim and Lüneburg offer workshops, exhibitions and events in the field of art and culture for students. In addition, the Studentenwerk supports the students' own cultural projects financially and through intensive advice.

Legal basis, legal mandate and financing

The tasks of the student union are stipulated by law in the Lower Saxony University Act (NHG). It has the task of economic, health, social and cultural promotion and advice for students in its area of ​​responsibility in accordance with the ordinance on the competence of the student unions. The Studentenwerk is financed to around 80% by its own income and student contributions - the so-called Studentenwerkbeitrag. The remaining 20% ​​comes mainly from grants and reimbursements from the state of Lower Saxony and the municipalities.
