history

On November 30, 2010, BASF and INEOS signed a letter of intent to combine their major styrene businesses. In April 2011, the US competition authorities approved the establishment of the new joint venture unconditionally. On May 12, 2011, Styrolution successfully placed a bond of 480 million euros with a maturity in 2016. At the end of May 2011, BASF and INEOS signed an agreement regulating the cooperation in the new Styrolution joint venture. At the beginning of June 2011, the European Commission approved the establishment of the Styrolution Joint Venture on condition that the companies sell an ABS production site in Tarragona , Spain. This production location corresponds to less than 3% of the pro forma EBITDA before special items of Styrolution in relation to the year 2010.

The company was founded in October 2011 as a joint venture between BASF and INEOS. On October 1st, 2011, Styrolution entered the market for the first time as an independent company.

In February 2014, the company announced that it would close its plant in Indian Orchard, USA, due to an oversupply of standard plastics and relocate production to other locations. The polystyrene plant has so far produced more than 100,000 tons.

On June 30, 2014, it was announced in a joint statement that INEOS would take over the 50% stake in BASF for a purchase price of EUR 1.1 billion.

On January 18, 2016, Styrolution announced that the company would henceforth operate under the name INEOS Styrolution.
