Ineos (own spelling INEOS) is a group of privately owned chemical companies headquartered in London .

As a result of a management buy-out of the former petrochemical holdings of BP (formerly British Petroleum ) in Antwerp ( Belgium ), the group was formed in 1998 under the direction of Jim Ratcliffe, the current CEO, and has since expanded rapidly through the acquisition of other businesses.

history

Some of the production facilities previously belonged to Amoco , BASF , BP , Dow Chemical , ICI , Phenolchemie , Solvay , UCB , Union Carbide and Sasol . In 1998 Ineos was founded and the ethylene derivatives business was acquired from Inspec in Antwerp. After a presentation from the year 2001, the name of Ineos resulted IN spec E thylene O hydroxides and S pecialities, however, another explanation was 2,013 known.

In 2000 a phenol / acetone factory was established in Alabama, USA.

In 2001 Ineos acquired Crosfield and operates as Ineos Silicas . In the same year, the company acquired ICI's chlorine chemicals business , which trades as Ineos Chlor , ICI Klea , which trades as Ineos Fluor , Dow Chemical's global ethanolamine business , the majority shareholding in EVC (a joint venture between EniChem and ICI), and phenol chemistry , Gladbeck, which operates as Ineos Phenol .

Ineos acquired Methanova Mainz in 2003 , which now operates under Ineos Paraform . In 2004 EVC Films was founded as a separate business. In 2005 Ineos Enterprises Ltd was formed . EVC is completely taken over by Ineos, which leads to the reorganization of Ineos Chlor . Two new companies are created: Ineos ChlorVinyls and Ineos Films and Compounds . Ineos Films acquired “Adriaplast” and “Caleppiovinil” in Italy.

Also in 2005, the Canadian polystyrene business was bought by BASF and Styrenics was founded. The acquisition of the UCB melamine resin plant in Fechenheim (formerly Cassella) added a worldwide melamine resin and additives business with production facilities in Frankfurt am Main and Springfield (USA). This was intended to create synergies with Ineos Paraform in Mainz and Ineos Melamines in Fechenheim.

Ineos bought Innovene , BP's Olefine & Derivate (O&D) division, with the refinery sites in Lavéra (France) and Grangemouth (Scotland) and a chemical site in Cologne-Worringen (Germany), which was originally called EC Erdölchemie , in 2005 . With an estimated annual turnover of 25 billion  US $ (2005) brought by Innovene at a price of 9 billion US dollars, the previous Ineos turnover of approx. 8 billion $ (2004) has quadrupled. The number of people employed doubled. With this acquisition, Ineos became the third largest independent petrochemical company in the world.

In June 2007 Lanxess brought its Spanish subsidiary Lustran ( Tarragona ) into a joint venture with the British chemical company. Lanxess' exit was handled in two steps: First, Lanxess founded a joint venture with Ineos, which took over 51% of the shares in Lustran Polymers , Ineos ABS . According to the company, Ineos paid around 35 million euros in September 2007, the first partial payment of the purchase price in two steps. To finance this takeover, Ineos sold its PVC paste division with locations in Schkopau and Hillhouse (UK) to the German PVC manufacturer Vinnolit (Advent International).

In 2008/2009 the group got into financial distress as a result of the economic crisis. After negotiations with the creditors (a consortium of several banks), the group was restructured and financed on different terms. The company management then announced that the financial position of the group was safe again and also secured by the banks.

In 2010 Ineos moved its headquarters from the United Kingdom to Switzerland for tax reasons. In 2016 the seat was moved back to the UK.

In 2014, Ineos took over Sasol Solvents Germany GmbH with its two production sites in Moers and Herne and operates them under the new name Ineos Solvents. Here u. a. Solvents such as isopropanol , butanol , ethanol produced.

In September 2015 it was reported that Ineos was holding talks with Lanxess about a coordinated approach to the market.

On June 29, 2020, Ineos acquired BP's petrochemicals business for $ 5 billion.
