Subliminal (2006)

Subliminal (born November 13, 1979 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli rapper and producer. The real name of the musician is Ya'akov "Kobi" Shimoni.

Career and status

Subliminal and the artists associated with him on his label TACT Records (the name TACT stands for Tel Aviv City Team ) are the most successful Israeli music group of all time. They landed more than ten number one hits in Israel and sold more than a million albums worldwide by 2006. At the same time, TACT Records is the largest music label in Israel.

Subliminal works with various musicians, including SHI 360 , but above all with his partner Yoav Eliasi alias "The Shadow" ( Hebrew הצל), with which he recorded the album The Light & The Shadow in 2002 . Subliminal was the first Israeli musician to work with an international hip-hop giant: he recorded a track with Wyclef Jean for the album “Just When You Thought It Was All Over” . He also worked with artists from the Wu-Tang Clan and the Israeli violinist Miri Ben-Ari , known as The Hip-Hop Violinist .

Subliminals texts often address the Middle East conflict from an Israeli point of view and are therefore considered nationalistic, but above all they reflect the turmoil in the region. In the song Biladi ( Arabic for “My Country” and at the same time the title of the Palestinian anthem ) he sings the last line of the chorus in Arabic and thus addresses the mutual claim to the country. Despite nationalistic undertones in some of the songs, the multilingual song Peace in the Middle East (refrain line: “ Salam , peace, shalom ”) by the TACT All-Stars, in which he raps the first verse in Hebrew, stands for the effort to create one Pacification of the region.

Apart from the political songs, Subliminal also has many apolitical hits in its repertoire, such as Move With The Bass / Bounce (2002), Toro (2006) and most recently Alai ( Hebrew עלי, Eng. "Me", as part of the refrain, Hebrew להסתכל עלי, "Lehistakel alai ", dt. "Look at me "), which he recorded in 2009 together with Dana International .

In the debate about the IDF soldier Elor Azaria , who killed an injured Palestinian terrorist lying on the ground with a shot in the head, Shimoni took the soldier's side. On April 19, 2016, it was announced that he would take part in a support rally for the soldier.
