Substitute - The Songs of The Who is a tribute album for the British rock band The Who . The 2001 published album contains ten cover versions of British and American musicians and bands as well as a live version of the theme song, performed by The Who themselves.

background

The idea for the album came from Bob Pridden , who has worked with The Who as a sound engineer and producer for over 40 years. With the band Cast , Pridden had recorded a cover version of The Seeker , which was originally only intended as the B-side of a single. Priddens daughter came up with the idea of releasing a complete album of Who cover songs.

Among the artists are British musicians like Paul Weller or David Bowie and American bands like Pearl Jam or Fastball . In the booklet , all musicians write about their relationship with the Who. Not only the musical quality is mentioned, but also the cultural significance of the band. Paul Weller wrote:

"The first time I heard the album My Generation it just blew my head off. The power and the danger in the playing coupled with Pete's [Townshend] abstract street poetry was just fantastic."

- Paul Weller

In the song Who Are You by Stereophonics , Noel Gallagher , guitarist for the band Oasis , sings the backing vocals .

The album was received rather cautiously by the critics. It was criticized, among other things, that the production of the pieces was too good and thus ran counter to the ideals of the band, which in the 1960s and 1970s tended to rely on provocation.
