The new combination to Succowia balearica was published in 1792 by Friedrich Casimir Medicus in plant genera , 1, page 65 by placing this species in the genus Succowia which he newly established. The generic name Succowia honors the German botanist and natural scientist, professor of natural sciences Georg Adolf Suckow (1751–1813), who was a colleague of Medicus .
