Sugata Mitra

Sugata Mitra (born February 12, 1952 in Calcutta , India ) is an Indian educational scientist and computer scientist . He teaches in England as a professor of "Educational technology" at the "School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences" of Newcastle University in Newcastle upon Tyne and as a visiting professor at the "Media Lab" of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Mitra became known through his experiment " Hole in the Wall ", which he started in 1999 , which researched the learning behavior of children without guidance and supervision. Inspired by its results, the NIIT founded the Hole-in-the-Wall Education Ltd. project in 2001 with the help of the World Bank . (HiWEL) with the aim of enabling children in an educationally poor environment to learn with little effort.

In 2012 he received the Leonardo European Corporate Learning Award for his commitment . In 2013 he received the TED prize, endowed with one million dollars, on the same occasion .
