Sujatha Singh (born July 1954 ) is an Indian diplomat .

Life

She was born the daughter of the secret service chief and later governor TV Rajeswar and graduated from Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi in 1973 with a bachelor's degree and in 1975 the Delhi School of Economics with a master's degree in economics.

Singh joined the Indian diplomatic service in 1976. From 1978 to 1982 she was employed as the second secretary at the Indian embassy in Germany in Bonn . She then returned to New Delhi as Undersecretary with responsibility for Nepal . In 1985 she went to the Indian High Commissioner in Ghana in Accra as the first secretary , until 1989-1992 when she worked as an advisor at the Embassy in France in Paris . From 1992 to 1995 she worked again in India as director of the department for economic coordination. In 1995 she attended the National Defense College in New Delhi and then served as a secretary at the Foreign Service Institute in 1996 and 1997 . From 1997 to 2000, Singh was Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy in Thailand in Bangkok and Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). From 2000 to 2004 she was Indian Consul General in Italy in Milan . From 2004 she worked again at the ministry with responsibility for Western Europe and the European Union . In 2007 she became Indian High Commissioner in Australia . She held the office until 2012. During her tenure in Australia there were considerable tensions and discussions in the bilateral relations between the two countries. On the one hand caused by a racially motivated attack on Indian students in Australia, on the other hand by the Australian decision to allow uranium deliveries to India. In March 2012 she became the Indian ambassador to Germany.

In 2013, Singh became foreign secretary and thus head of administration of the Indian Foreign Ministry and the country's highest diplomat. Although her term of office was scheduled to end in October 2015, she was released on January 28, 2015. The cause was probably different foreign policy views with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi .

She is married to Sanjay Singh, who also worked in India's foreign service. Singh also speaks the German language .
