For the first time in history, the 5000 m in women's speed skating at the 1988 Winter Olympics was held on February 28 at L'anneau de vitesse .
The first Olympic champion over 5000 m was Yvonne van Gennip from the Netherlands , who set a new world record. Silver and bronze went to Andrea Ehrig and Gabi Zange from the German Democratic Republic.
