Mary Angela Docter (born February 11, 1961 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is a former American speed skater .
Docter was active in the World Cup circus for more than ten years, taking part in four Winter Olympic Games . She made her first international appearance in 1979 at the all- around world championship in The Hague . There she reached 15th place. A year later she was able to qualify for the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid . There she reached 12th place over 1500 meters and 6th place over 3000 meters. At the Junior World Championship , which took place shortly afterwards , she was fourth in the all-around event after she had won the 3000 meter race. The all- around World Championships in 1981 and 1982 finished Docter in 12th place. At the 1983 World Championships , she was disqualified. The all-around World Cup in 1984 was more successful . There she took 10th place in the small quadruple and was third over 3000 meters. At the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo that same year , Docter competed over 1000 meters, 1500 meters and 3000 meters. She reached the places 24, 14 and 6. Then she withdrew from active sport.
In November 1987, Docter reversed this decision and returned to international competitions. She qualified directly for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . Over 3000 meters she was able to take 19th place there, over 5000 meters she reached 11th place. At the all- around world championship in the following year she was again fourth; the sprint world championship she finished 26th. Her fourth Winter Olympics didcter in 1992 in Albertville . Over 1500 meters and 3000 meters she was 15th, over 5000 meters she reached 17th place. In the subsequent all-around world championship , she finished 11th. After this season, Docter finally resigned from competitive sports.
Docter graduated from the University of Wisconsin . Her sister Sarah was also active as a speed skater.
