Sultan Ahmed Prison
The Sultan Ahmed Prison ( Turkish Sultanahmet Cezaevi ; Ottoman در سعادت جنایت توقیفخانه سی İA Der-i Saʿādet Cināyet Tevḳīfḫānesi ) is a former prison in the Eminönü district of Istanbul .
The prison ceased operations on January 25, 1969, and the building now houses the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet .
jail
The building was built around 1920 in the Turkish neoclassical style. Depending on the source, the pioneers of the “First National Architecture” Mimar Kemaleddin or Mehmet Vedat Tek are named as architects , who were strongly influenced by the nationalist ideology of Ziya Gökalp .
The prison was built within the framework of the regulation on the internal administration of reformatory and detention centers from 1880 ( Tevkifhâne ve Hapishâne İdare-i Dahiliyelerine Dair Nizamname ) and had a capacity for approx. 1000 inmates. Women and young people were also detained here. The name " Prison for Serious Crimes Istanbul 1337" ( Dersaadet Cinayet Tevkifhânesi 1337 ) can be read in Arabic script on the inscription above today's main entrance .

The prison in literature
As writers, journalists and artists were often imprisoned in Sultan Ahmed Prison, it finds its place in Turkish literature and poetry . So Nazım Hikmet began his work Human Landscapes ( Memleketimden İnsan Manzaraları ) as a prisoner in this prison. Kemal Tahir gives a detailed account of the prison in his book Prisoner of the City ( Esir Şehrin Mahpusu ). Orhan Kemal talks in cell 72 ( 72nd Koğuş ) about his everyday life in detention. Vedat Türkali's poem about the Sultan Ahmed prison is well known:

The institution is also mentioned outside of Turkish literature; for example in Graham Greene's Orient Express .
hotel
The building was neglected for a long time and gradually deteriorated until the decision was made in 1992 to use the building for a hotel. The architect Yalçın Özüekren was commissioned with the renovation and in September 1996 the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet was able to start operations. Historic buildings such as Hagia Sophia , the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and the Topkapı Palace are in the vicinity of the hotel . The hotel has 65 rooms and suites.
