Sultan's palaces in Brunei Darussalam

Since the establishment of the Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam at the end of the 14th century, numerous palaces have been the seat of the Sultans of Brunei .

Palaces

Since 1984 the Istana Nurul Iman , the largest palace on earth, has been the seat of the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. This has been Hassanal Bolkiah since 1967 .

Also in use (as of 2007) are Istana Nurul Izzah in Jerudong , Istana Darul Hana in Jalan Tutong , Istana Darussalam in Kampung Sumbiling , Istana Manggalela in Kuala Belait and Istana Pantai in Tutong . Istana Edinburgh in Jalan Menteri Besar is primarily used for guests of the Sultan .

In the times of Sultan Hashim , the Istana Sultan Hashim was used as the regent seat.

Other historical palaces included:

  • Istana Mahkota : used by Sultan Muhammad Tajuddin in the middle of the 18th century; later demolished to make way for the construction of Istana Darul Hana to make
  • Istana Majalis : In the 1920s and 1930s, most likely used by Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam II and his family; destroyed
  • Istana Kaca or Istana Sugara : Not far from the Istana Majalis, probably mainly used as a guest house
  • Istana Cermin : Destroyed

Istana Manggalela

Istana Manggalela, historically known as Istana Hinggap , is located in the district capital , Belait . It was completed in 1958 after two years of construction. The palace was used as the regional residence for Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin III. built and is a listed building .
