Muhammad Jamalul Alam II ( Arabic محمد جمال العالم الثاني, DMG Muḥammad Ǧamāl al-ʿĀlam aṯ-ṯānī ; * 1889 ; † September 11, 1924 ) was the 26th Sultan of Brunei . He ascended the throne in 1906 at the age of 17 and ruled Brunei until his sudden death from malaria .

Life

Muhammad Jamalul Alam was the eldest surviving son of Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam Aqamaddin . As a prince he was titled Pengiran Muda Bongsu Muhammad Jamalul Alam . When his father died in 1906, the business of government initially went to the Majlis Pemangku Raja (councilor). It was not until 1918 that Muhammad Jamalul Alam was crowned as sultan. He was an open-minded monarch and promoted the development of agriculture, medicine, and education.

In addition, he also promoted the understanding of Islam . Originally, teaching was mostly in the Surau (Small Mosque). As a token of his zeal, he had a mosque built, although the state had little money for it. This mosque was built on a plot of land near what is now Kampong Sultan Lama. The mosque was destroyed in a wartime bombing during the reign of his son Ahmad Tajuddin .

During his reign, Islamic law ( Sharia ) was also officially introduced. The so-called Muhammadan Law was introduced in 1912 and replaced the Kanun Brunei . In 1913 the Marriage and Divorce Act was introduced. The Sultan held his position on the State Council. Only with the introduction of the Residential System in 1906 was complete executive power, except in matters of religion and tradition, transferred from the Sultan to the Resident . In 1922 Alam moved from Istana Kampong Ayer to Istana Majlis.

Malaria caught him along with three other family members. He died on September 11, 1924 at the age of 35. His successor was his eldest son Ahmad Tajuddin (Pengiran Muda Besar Ahmad Tajuddin). Alam was buried in the royal mausoleum in Jalan Tutong.
